No one is certain how Leonardo really looked. But experts think Leonardo used himself as a model for the first two drawings shown here. They also think that the artist Raphael used Leonardo as a model for Plato in his painting of Greek philosophers, called The School of Athens.

When Leonardo wrote to Duke Sforza, he said, “In painting, I can do everything that it is possible to do.” Leonardo was a master at showing the way clothes drape over the body and the colors and details of skin and hair. His paintings have deep, rich colors.
